StoreFront Search Visibility Troubleshooting

A new or recently changed item sometimes does not appear in your StoreFront's on-site search results, even after you have confirmed the obvious settings look correct. This guide covers the item settings that gate search-result eligibility, the diagnostic steps to run before escalating, and when to bring in UltraCart support.

Item not appearing in search results

Symptoms: A new or recently edited item does not return in on-site search for any term that clearly matches its title or description. Whether the item's own page still loads depends on which setting is the cause: Exclude From Search alone leaves the item's page and site navigation working normally, but a missing StoreFront assignment or an Inactive status can affect the item everywhere, not just in search.

Root cause: One or more of three settings blocks a searchable item: the item is not assigned to the StoreFront, Exclude From Search is enabled, or the item is set as Inactive. Search requires the item to be assigned to the StoreFront and not inactive. Beyond those three conditions, items have also started appearing with no further merchant action after a delay, because the search index does not rebuild in real time.

Inventory status does not gate search visibility. An out-of-stock item still appears in search by default, the same as an in-stock one.

Diagnosis:

  1. Confirm the item is included on a StoreFront page. Assign it directly from the Item Editor's first tab, or from a page's Items tab set to manual assignment. Alternatively, a page set to Automatically Based on Conditions pulls the item in if a condition references its Folder, using the Item Folder or Item Folder and all sub folders condition. Folder membership only matters for a page configured to pull from it that way. It has no effect on a page using manual assignment. See Assigning Items to a StoreFront and Product and Group Pages for the full walkthrough of each method.
  2. Confirm the item is not set as Inactive.
  3. Confirm Exclude From Search is off. Both checkboxes sit in the StoreFront section of the Item Editor's first tab, below the item's page assignments.
  4. If all three check out and the item still is not returning, wait and retest before assuming a configuration error. Do not conclude the settings are wrong until you have ruled out an indexing delay.

Solution: Correct any of the three settings above, then save. If all three were already correct, no further action is usually needed. The search index does not rebuild the moment you save, so an item can start appearing on its own once the index catches up.

Escalation

Contact UltraCart support if your item is assigned to the StoreFront, is not Inactive, and is not excluded from search, and it still does not appear after you have given the index time to catch up.

To save a round trip, include:

  • Your merchant ID and the item ID.
  • When you corrected the settings, and what you changed.
  • Confirmation that all three settings were correct when you checked.
  • StoreFront Search covers the search engine's own configuration: search type, operator, field boosts, and faceted filters.
  • Item Editor covers every field on the item record, including Inactive and Exclude From Search.
  • Assigning Items to a StoreFront covers the three ways to put an item on a page.
  • Product and Group Pages covers the Item Folder and other automatic-assignment conditions.
  • Folders covers organizing items into the folders those conditions reference.
